An Irish maritime-inspired building project has been recognised for its ambition and innovation in the area of green landscaping and urban greening, and is the winner of the Irish Green Cities Award 2021. The Opus Building at Hanover Quay in Dublin 2 was submitted by McCauley Daye O’Connell Architects, who worked with Cairn Homes and AIT Urbanism + Landscape on delivering the project. The Irish Green Cities Award highlights domestic green infrastructure projects on a European stage. The Opus Building will represent Ireland at the European Green Cities Award 2022.

The Opus Building is a maritime inspired residential development that provides a wide range of high-end quality apartments. It received the award for its curvilinear expression, transparency to the street, and generous, green residential amenities. Judges were particularly impressed with the generous landscaped roof gardens and communal areas that provide residents with a beautiful oasis of calm and stunning views. The European style landscaped courtyard, allows the building to break the stereotype of urban living – being an exemplary addition to its neighbourhood and the city as a whole.

The award is delivered as part of the European Commission’s More Green Cities for Europe initiative. More Green Cities for Europe sees 13 European member states work together to highlight the added value of green space in urban environments. In Ireland, the programme is led by Bord Bia, in partnership with the Irish Hardy Nursery Stock Association.

Speaking about the winning entry, Val Farrell, Chair of the Irish Hardy Nursery Stock Association said: “As the conversation on sustainable cities and the liveability of our urban areas develops, projects like the Opus Building become increasingly important. Congratulations to McCauley Daye O’Connell Architects and all those behind the creation of the Opus Building.

“The Irish Hardy Nursery Stock Association is particularly encouraged to see features such as roof gardens and a landscaped courtyard included in the Opus Building development. We would encourage anyone looking to embrace green landscaping to contact their local nursery for more information on how locally grown stock can add value to your project.”

Michal Slawski, Development and Marketing Specialist, Horticulture at Bord Bia said: “Increasing the quantity and quality of green spaces in our urban areas benefits our health, wellbeing and the health of the planet. Through the More Green Cities in Europe campaign in Ireland, Bord Bia and the Irish Hardy Nursey Stock Association are making a strategic effort to future-proof and improve the urban environment through increased green landscaping and the inclusion of local grown nursery stock in projects. The Opus Building is a great example of this, and I wish it every success at the European Green Cities Award 2022.”
