Limerick City and County Council’s Greening Streets – Pop Up Forest/Mobile Nursery has been announced as one of the shortlisted projects in the Green Cities Europe Award 2023 – Ireland
The mobile pop up forest project launched on the June Bank Holiday weekend 2022. The pop-up forest consists of planters with integrated seating that house a variety of Irish grown trees – multistem silver birch, willow and cherry trees – giving a forest feel to the streets and creating a place for the public to dwell.
The pop-up forest appeared in different locations all over Limerick City during the Bank Holiday weekend, and in a rolling program can be used for a variety of events and celebrations in the city. The pop-up forest doubles as a mobile nursery, where trees are changed out every two years and planted into existing green areas, creating a rolling tree planting programme in the city.
The pop-up Forest highlights and increases awareness of the importance of trees for the environment, for the removal of carbon, for improving air quality, and playing a vital role in both climate change mitigation and climate adaptation.
This project was nominated by Limerick City and County Council.
Supported by European Union Funding, the Green Cities Europe campaign aims to combat the consequences of climate change and improve living and working conditions by encouraging the inclusion of green spaces in new building projects, and by adding them to existing projects. The Green Cities Europe campaign is being run by Bord Bia – The Irish Food Bord in Ireland on behalf of the Irish Hardy Nurserystock Association (IHNSA).
